Dipmeter and Electrical Borehole Image
Tools:
These pad tools measure the formation
microconductivity directly through an array of resistivity buttons that are pressed
against the borehole wall. Accordingly, they require a conductive
mud rather than an oil based one. Electrical
image tools normally provide the best high resolution borehole images in
conductive muds.
From image tools, bedding, fracture features, faults and stratigraphic
features can often be identified and quantified (The example on the left of
a 256 button, 8 pad FMI shows fractures and bedding). Dipmeters have fewer
buttons (four, six, eight, or twelve buttons), so though bedding features are
easily identified, fracture features are not.
The available tools are as follows:
Dipmeters: 3 button, 4 button (
HDT,
OBDT), 6 button (
SED,
HEXDIP), 8 button (
SHDT), 12 button (MBD)
Electrical Image tools: 4 pad (FMS), 6 pad (
EMI,
STAR), 8 pad (
FMI)
